RETREATS

A meditation retreat offers an opportunity to take a step back from our usual routines of work and home life. Zen Master Seung Sahn described the retreat experience as “leaping like a tiger while sitting.”

During a retreat, life becomes very simple. Sitting and walking meditation is at the heart of the retreat experience. In the Golden Wind tradition, chanting and bows support the heart of this “together action.” One-on-one consulting and kong-an interviews are offered with the retreat teacher, as are Dharma talks focusing on aspects of Zen practice. Simple vegetarian meals are served communally.

JDPSN Ann_0003Retreats include one-day, three-day, and longer periods for intensive practice. Each day begins early in the morning and continues into the evening.

Our Long Beach sangha is not residential, and members return to their homes for the night. Visitors from out-of-town may opt to stay at a local hotel, or with a sangha member. Accommodation at the Center may also be possible.

Our Calendar will indicate planned retreat dates. Suggested retreat fees and dana (donations) vary by retreat.

If you have not previously participated in a retreat at the Center, please speak with Ann JDPSN or Abbot Roy about your interest.
